A Limitless Resource
Spam is the only truly limitless resource on the web and the ability to resist the endless waves of spam may well well be the single most important requirement of future distributed computing architectures…
Anybody who proposes a web architecture that doesn’t provide a means to handle spam is just engaging in wishful thinking.

I remember a hilarious video from Rob Riggle of the Daily Show, where he interviews a spammer, who refers to himself as a "high volume email deployer". it's awesome.
I'm pretty sure the solution to spam will come from social networks: you choose who enters into your life and who don't.
By allowing a few degrees of separation between you and the other person you can be reached by almost everyone.
And spammers simply don't have a place in this network as nobody wants to be seen hanging out with "the bad crowd".

I hardly ever see spam. Gmail's filtering is very, very good, although it does stumble from time to time. I think Paul Graham made spam a solved problem years ago.
